Photo-biomodulation, or red-light therapy, is the trending natural healing therapy for animals and humans. In the equestrian world, major players are now launching red light therapy wraps made in countries like China.

The Photizo was launched in the UK in 2013 & I have spent a decade using, selling, and hiring out the Photizo Vetcare. In addition, I offer the human Pain Relief and Sport Photizo devices, both of which hold Medical CE certification and utilise medical-grade LEDs—just like the Vetcare. It's important to differentiate the LEDs used in fabric wraps from medical-grade LEDs. Unlike medical-grade LEDs, which are embedded in medical-grade silicone or like the Photizo in a rechargeable handheld device. The LEDs in fabric wraps have an output similar to a red LED lightbulb. Currently, true medical-grade LEDs cannot be integrated into fabric wraps.
Manufacturers & suppliers of red-light wraps will state that their LEDs wavelengths are around 660nm & 850nm but this means nothing unless you know the power output of the LEDs. The power output of the Photizos is 340mW/cm2 & 194mW/cm2. 30% pulsed & 70% continuous. Due to the power output, these can’t be put into fabric or neoprene. The other difference is the timed dose, the fabric LED wraps are around 15 mins whereas the dose for the Photizo are 31 – 41 secs (the skincare version 16secs). This is due to the power output of Medical grade LEDs.
The LEDs in fabric wraps cannot be repaired if they stop working. A two-year warranty from a supplier is reassuring, but if the device fails on day 731, you would have to purchase a new one.
I was surprised to read a supplier’s disclaimer stating they weren’t liable if red light therapy didn’t work. This undermines the entire Photo-biomodulation market, including low-level laser therapies. As a small business selling Photizos, this practice is disheartening, it misleads customers into spending money on products that, in reality, offer little more than an overpriced hot water bottle.
We have a service centre in the UK for repairs, so after the 2-year warranty if your Photizo needs a new battery, this can be replaced. My first Photizo lasted 9 years before I had to get the battery replaced!
